Read ‘Em and Write ‘Em: Blogging Essentials for the Green Apple - So you’re new to blogging and you want to gain a steady and strong following. How do you do this?
Well for starters, you must have excellent posts on your blog. You have to have stuff in there that readers will be interested in – whether it’s for their entertainment or information or even what is called nowadays as “infotainment.”
Sure, you’d like to keep writing about yourself but unless you’re a popular celebrity, the general public will not be so interested in your everyday adventures. They can only take so much personal stuff in one reading.
So what do you write about? Where can you find inspiration?
Read, Read and Read Some More
If you want to write relevant stories or you want to get inspiration, you should start reading and never cease. Read the daily papers, for starters.
Netizens want to be informed about current events and you can feed to this “want” by providing your readers with snippets of the latest news and perhaps add a bit of your take on the matter.
Of course, you may want to write something other than the news. What are your interests? Do you love gardening, DIY projects, arts and crafts or cooking?
Read up on your interests to expand your knowledge on these and then write about them. If you love cooking, check out a new cookbook and then whip up some of the recipes so you can write about them in your blog.
Do you love books? How about reading the ones that are currently on the bestseller list and beat everyone to the punch by making your own review way ahead of others?
The point here is that reading plays an important role in writing. You want to be well-informed about your subject before you write about it and reading is one way to get information about what you want to write about.
Now, if you want to blog about personal stuff, reading will still come in handy. How so? You can expand your vocabulary through reading. You can also learn about writing styles when you read different genres.
Read Other Blogs
You want to know how it’s done? Read directly from the source. Read blogs – all sorts of blogs that you find online. You will discover just how other bloggers write, what they write about, how they respond to their readers and how they come up with read-worthy posts.
You will find that some blogs will lose your interest faster than you can click on the next page while others will keep you hooked and entertained for hours and hours on end. With each reading, make a few notes.
Take note of why you found one blog boring and another interesting. Take note of the readers’ reactions to various posts through their comments.
How does the blogger interact with his readers? You should also take note of this so you’ll know how to handle comments on your blog as well.
So you see, blogging isn’t just about writing random stuff that’s in your head. To be a successful blogger, you need to read and be informed about the latest trends and current events.
You can’t just say you love a certain book without backing it up with your own experience when you read it. You can’t also just say that so and so should not be in government without backing it up with facts.
Opinions based on hearsay are quite dangerous and you don’t want to incur the ire of your readers by writing adamantly about something you are actually clueless about.
